In the outskirts of Tombstone, sitting around the campfire,
singing songs with some friends, everyone was feeling fine.
It was another beautiful night, not a cloud in the sky,
The coffee was piping hot, just having a good time.
Up rode a see-through cowboy from out of the black night.
We all stopped and looked at him with faces of surprise.
He said, “Begging your pardon folks, I don't mean to impose,
but the coffee sure smells good, and dust has coated my throat.”
“Help yourself” we said to him. “Come and sit down awhile.”
I asked him what his name was and he just kinda smiled.
He said “I used to be a lawman, a long long time ago.
I traveled these parts for many a year, it will always be like home.”
[Chorus]
Ghosts on the trail - I can see them
Ghosts on the trail - I can hear them.
Ghosts on the trail - I can see them
Ghosts on the trail - I can see them
Ghosts on the trail - I can hear them.
Ghosts on the trail - I can see them
“There are things going on around you all at this same time and place.
And I know that you don't know, or recognize, my face.
The past never died, it just kinda moved out of view.
If you folks would like me to, I'll be happy to show you.”
Before we could ask what he meant the campfire began to blaze.
Three more transparent riders rode in off the trail.
Then a strong feeling came over us, it was like going back in time.
Not far from the OK Corral, at the moon coyotes cried.
We were all numb inside, our minds where blown.
The four men had on six shooters, and their eyes where black as coal.
Ghosts on the trail - I can see them
Ghosts on the trail - I can hear them.
Ghosts on the trail - I can see them
Ghosts on the trail - I can see them
Ghosts on the trail - I can hear them.
Ghosts on the trail - I can see them
“Don't be afraid my new friends,” the first man reassured us.
“We’re just here to enjoy your company, and this coffee does taste good.”
All night long we sang cowboy songs, while one of my buddies played guitar,
a hootin’ and a hollerin’ under a million desert stars.
At the first sign of sunrise, the men said “It's time to go.”
They thanked us all very kindly, and off the four men rode.
None of us will ever forget, and nothing can ever compare,
To the night we made friends with The Ghosts On The Trail.
Ghosts on the trail - I can see them
Ghosts on the trail - I can hear them.
Ghosts on the trail - I can see them
Ghosts on the trail - I can see them
Ghosts on the trail - I can hear them.
Ghosts on the trail - I can see them

"Prophet's a pretty dark dude. He writes what he knows about, and goddammit, he's seen some shit in his life. I applaud Prophet for hanging it all out there and being unabashedly open about his struggles." - Michael Lopez (Phoenix New Times)
